Two young Maori entrepreneurs creating innovative resources & technology to help you Get Legal on our NZ Roads.
Terry & Swanie Nelson are the owners and facilitators of Let's Get Legal NZ. We both come from strong Community Development Backgrounds coupled with roles that have seen us both be part of some amazing projects and have held roles at grass roots to Directing organisations.
Our work was birthed while transitioning young people from care to independence. Seeing them struggle with the current systems resources, 3 years ago we re-developed a new methodology & resources to help young people learn & comprehend the road code in the easiest and quickest way possible while retaining meaningful learning outcomes with safety on our roads for all being absolutely paramount. We want to ensure all young people have access to learning opportunities and education that suit their needs, especially young Maori & Pasifika. Prior to launching our curriculum nationwide we had been running our one of a kind workshops primarily with young people since 2014. We have & will continue to develop solutions to reduce the barriers our young people encounter while navigating our New Zealand drivers licensing system. We absolutely love that we can play a part in supporting individuals to live lives that they value. |

ABOUT US
Lets Get Legal NZ exists to support individuals to gain their independence & improve their education & employment opportunities by helping them to attain their drivers licences. We use our own innovative resources & technology to help them through that process. At the center of our mahi are young Māori & Pasifika .
From 2016-2017, 70 - 90,000 young people faced major barriers to progressing to a full licence. Young drivers were 6-8 times more likely to crash than the safest group of drivers. 84% of young people report breaching the terms of their Learner or Restricted Licence. Only 9% of 18-24 yr old beneficiaries have their full licence when they register, another 15% have their restricted licence. Between 9,000 and 10,000 people aged 18-24 had no licence when they first signed up for a Jobseeker-Work Ready benefit.
The average reading age in New Zealand is 12, but comprehending the Road Code and learner test questions require a reading age between 14 and 16. Learners must answer 32 questions correctly out of 35, and there are over 200 possible questions to prepare for, some of which are highly technical. Restricted & Full Licence Tests require correct driving, following instruction and also communicating Hazards. We believe our resources & technology assists young people to navigate a large majority of this process a lot easier than some of the current market resources.
We currently offer:
- Fast 3 hours only Learner Licence Workshops
- Fast Online Learner Licence Course
- Restricted - Full Licence Practical APPS
- Driving Lessons
- Student Ambassador Programs
With a 98% pass rate to date we have a lot of happy kiwi's. So if you struggle with the current resources on the market then what we do is for you. You won't find a class or resources like ours as we've designed it ourselves and it's awesome!
